SideXSide is a peer-to-peer safety companion platform built for universities. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We keep it plain, because privacy shouldn't require a law degree.
1. Who we are
SideXSide ("we", "us", "our") operates sidexside.ai and the SideXSide mobile app. We work with universities across the United States to help keep students safer on and around campus.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us directly
- Name, email, and phone number when you request a demo or contact us
- University name, role, and job title
- Anything you share in messages, form fields, or calls with our team
Information collected automatically
- Device type, browser, operating system, and IP address
- Pages viewed, time on site, and referral source
- Cookies and similar technologies (see section 7)
Information from the SideXSide app (students)
- Account details: name, email, university affiliation
- Location data only when you actively use safety features (e.g. walk-with-me, check-in). You control when location sharing starts and stops.
- Emergency contacts you choose to add
- In-app safety interactions with verified peers
3. How we use your information
- To deliver and improve the SideXSide platform and app
- To respond to demo requests and support questions
- To send relevant updates to university partners (you can opt out any time)
- To enable safety features like check-ins, walk-with-me, and emergency contact alerts
- To detect fraud, abuse, and keep the platform secure
- To comply with legal obligations
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in these cases:
- Service providers who help us operate the platform (hosting, analytics, email, CRM). They're bound by contract to use data only for our purposes.
- University partners for aggregated, anonymized usage insights. We do not share individual student safety data with universities without explicit student consent or a legal requirement.
- Legal when required by law, court order, or to protect rights and safety.
- Business transfers if SideXSide is involved in a merger or acquisition, with notice to affected users.
5. Data retention
We keep personal data only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected. Demo and contact form submissions: up to 24 months. App account data: for the life of your account, plus 90 days after deletion for backups. You can request deletion any time.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under GDPR and CCPA), you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your data
- Opt out of marketing communications
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (we do not sell data)
- Export your data in a portable format
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@sidexside.ai.
7. Cookies and analytics
We use cookies and similar technologies to remember preferences, measure traffic, and improve performance. Tools we use include:
- Meta Pixel for advertising measurement
- Hotjar / Contentsquare for anonymous session insights
- Standard analytics cookies
You can control cookies in your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how the site works.
8. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards — encryption in transit, access controls, and regular reviews. No system is 100% secure, but we work hard to protect what you share with us.
9. Children's privacy
SideXSide is intended for users 18 and older, or 13+ with university affiliation where permitted by law. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.
10. International users
SideXSide is based in the United States. If you access the service from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US under applicable laws.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. Continued use of the service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
